Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Programs Promote Services Using Exterior Bus Ads

|
Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs provide valuable nutrition education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support and information to pregnant women, mothers and their children. Although WIC programs are free to eligible women and children, most people are not aware of the existence of WIC programs in their communities. To address the lack of awareness, several CAA-administered WIC program offices have taken steps to inform their communities about their services. While most CAAs focus on traditional advertising methods, some CAAs use the bolder method of public transit advertising to inform residents about their valuable services.
South Plains Community Action Association (SPCAA) recently promoted its WIC program on the outside and inside of public transit buses in Lubbock, Texas. SPCAA’s bus ads promote their nutrition education and breastfeeding support programs, among others, and include an 800 phone number and a website address. “Bus advertising helps promote our WIC programs and services to our citizens, who may not otherwise know about their WIC benefits, says Sandra Hill, SPCAA WIC Program Director. Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) also recently advertised its WIC program on Ames, Iowa buses, with a focus on the importance of breastfeeding. MICA’s bus ad touts the benefits of breastfeeding and encourages mothers not to give up on breastfeeding without first seeking MICA’s assistance. “Bus advertising helps us increase awareness about the availability of our WIC programs and services,” says MICA Health Services Compliance Manager Kate Pergande. |
